STATEMENT  OF  COMMITMENT

The Diocese of St. Petersburg remains committed to the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People adopted by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.  All employees and persons serving in ministry who are entrusted with the care, responsibility, or supervision of children, youth, and, or vulnerable adults are required to comply with fingerprint policy for background screening.  Further, the Diocese has established safe environment training programs for employees and volunteers serving in parish and school communities.  Anyone who has been harmed by someone serving in ministry is encouraged to contact law enforcement, the Florida Abuse Hotline at 800-962-2873, or the diocesan Victim Assistance Minister at 1-866-407-4505.

Safe Environment News!!

Dear Nativity Catholic School Parents:

There are three requirements needed in order to be able to volunteer on campus.

1.      Complete a Volunteer Application Form

2.      Attend a SET certification class

3.      Obtain and successfully pass a Level II background clearance

Most of us have already fulfilled all three of these requirements.  However, if you have previously taken a Safe Environment Training course in the past but it’s been five years, it’s time to renew.  How will you know if it’s been five years?   Please check your badge and look under the “SET EXP DATE.”   The date indicated here is the date in which your SET certification will expire.  See the example listed below:

 LEVEL II EXP DATE

01/01/2016

SET EXP DATE

01/01/2011

If your SET certification will be expiring soon, you may renew one of two ways:

1.      Renew online by clicking on http://www.shieldthevulnerable.org/ and following the instructions provided.  There is a cost of approx. $10.00 if you use this option.  Once you have completed the online course, make sure to print the two certificates of completion. One is a certificate for “Child Abuse” and the other is “Detecting Predators.” Please submit both certificates to the school so that your information may be updated and a new volunteer badge can be issued to you, or

2.      Attend another live 3 hour Safe Environment Training course offered throughout the Diocese.  Please click on: http://www.calendarwiz.com/calendars/calendar.php?crd=dosp&&PHPSESSID=ac9732f8f9229c562fa91c11cf2b324c&jsenabled=1&winH=816 to view where the next classes are being offered.  There is no cost to attend a live session.  Please submit a copy of the certificate to the school so that your information may be updated and a new volunteer badge can be issued to you.

Please note:  The online renewal course mentioned above is offered only to those volunteers who have previously attended a live 3 hour session.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above Safe Environment Training requirements, please contact Kathy Damico via email at finadminast@nativitycatholicchurch.org or by calling (813) 681-4608 ext. 2226

Training Valid for 5 Years
Safe Environment Training has officially been approved to be valid for 5 years.  The Diocese officially announced this news (in June 2009).  It is also retroactive, so if someone was trained in 2006, your expiration date is now 2011.
