Thanksgiving Meals for Veterans

Each year, the Sir Knights of Bishop Charles B. McLaughlin Assembly 1850, located at Nativity, donate food to feed veteran families in need during the Thanksgiving Holiday. The 4th Degree is known as the Patriotic Degree, and we dedicate ourselves to helping our veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

It started in 2011 with individual Knights buying 35 turkeys which were then donated to the VA offices at 46th Street. VA representatives then delivered the turkeys to needy veteran families.

Each year, it became a tradition and grew in size to include all the items needed to cook a complete meal: Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, two vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, and cake mix.

Last year, Knights from Assembly 1850 and Assembly 3418 from St. Stephen combined resources to provide 180 Thanksgiving meals to veteran families in need. This year we have committed to providing a combined total of 200 meals.

This is accomplished through the 46th Street HUD-VA Supportive Housing (VASH) program. The Assemblies purchase the turkeys and food items and deliver them to the agency at 46th street. They then assemble the meal boxes and deliver them to families that have been identified throughout the year.

Last year the children of Nativity truly humbled us with a donation of $1030. This gift was truly a Godsend and brightened the Thanksgiving Holiday for 180 families who otherwise were looking at a much somber celebration. Thank you so much for all you did.
